On-Waves uses exclusive technology to enable GSM, GPRS, EDGE, CDMA, 1XRTT and EVDO mobile connectivity. Our significant advances in maritime telecommunications remain unmatched.
The equipment required on board the vessel to provide On-Waves service is composed of a rack and a cable network (Distributed Antenna System or DAS) linked to existing VSAT infrastructure, mainly through CAT5 cabling.
On-Waves is independent from any VSAT provider and its exclusive technology can be linked to any VSAT provider.
On-Waves utilizes dynamic bandwidth allocation software, silent detection and enhanced voice compression codecs to minimize bandwidth usage from the existing VSAT infrastructure.
Calls are routed from the vessel to the terrestrial gateway of your existing VSAT provider and from this point directly to On-Waves GSM/CDMA core network for call processing.
On-Waves terrestrial links are connected to all major VSAT gateways. All links are fully redundant with automatic fail-over to provide unrivaled service for International GSM, GPRS and CDMA call terminations.
In full compliance with BARG-46 regulations, the On-Waves service switches-on automatically when the vessel enters international waters (which is generally 12 nautical miles or in some cases beyond 2 nm following ITU and GSMA rules and recommendations). Upon activation passengers receive a Welcome SMS announcing the availability of service.
Mobile phones display “On-Waves” as the network service provider for Post and Pre-Paid roaming mobiles.
On-Waves pre-paid service sold through the ship can be configured to present the ship’s name as its network service provider.
On-Waves’ Síminn-specific maritime roaming agreements, under full compliance with BARG46 regulations and linked to our core network, offer worldwide coverage on-waves, in-air and on-land.
On-Waves offers L-Band based technology for specific applications (on board Cargo Vessels or Business Aircraft for example) that does not currently have an existing VSAT service deployed.
